North Shore Horizons...
"New Beginnings"

A project that would remodel an existing building in downtown Two Harbors to provide affordable and transitional housing is underway. For more than five years, the North Shore Horizons (NSH) Board of Directors has been looking for a new space to either build or renovate to house their office and more apartments for survivors of violence. In October, NSH purchased Second Chance Antiques, the brick building at 127 7th Street in Two Harbors, for $250,000 with a loan from the non-profit agency, Corporation for Supportive Housing. This same organization also awarded NSH a $30,000 forgivable loan to hire a consultant to help them throughout the building project. The project involves remodeling the building to provide six affordable rental apartments and on-site office space for NSH, which Women in Construction will act as the general contractor. Clients served will be survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault, and their children. The project will fill a great need in Lake and Cook counties. Construction will be complete January 2009.
